We all know that many characters on the show are named after a famous person: John Locke, Faraday, Rousseau, David Hume, Mikhail Bakunin, C. S. Lewis and Hawkings are known philosophers, scientists, writers, etc. What I just found out is that Alpert is also named after someone popular: the real-life Dr. Richard Alpert, a noted psychologist and Hindu spiritualist.
Alpert (born April 6, 1931) was dismissed in 1963 from Harvard University for his research (in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and others) into psilocybin, LSD-25, and other psychedelic chemicals. Aldous Huxley wrote the book Island (read the previous entry on SL-LOST.com to learn how this book is connected to LOST).
He later traveled to India, where he was given his Hindu spiritual name “Ram Dass”, which translates as “Servant of God” (on LOST, Richard could be considered a servant of Jacob --don’t you think?).
Alpert wrote of his experiences in the 1971 bestseller Be Here Now, and founded the Hanuman Foundation, a corporation created to “promulgate spiritual well-being among members of the society as a whole through education and service, by spiritual training and by publications and recordings, and to promote the study, practice, and teaching of spiritual knowledge.”
On the video below you can see Alpert discuss the psychological implications of the LSD psychedelic experience.
Big thanks to our reader Max for the heads up!

Tags: Richard AlpertThe LOST Book Club was launched by ABC earlier this year to catalogue a list of books related somehow to the show. During the next few days we will publish here the complete list of the books, sorted by each season. If you have read any of them we would love to hear your thoughts about them!
Season 1 List
Island
- Writer: Aldous Huxley
-
Episode: 1.01 Pilot
- Relevance: In the beginning of the book, the main character is “lying there like a corpse in the dead leaves, his hair mattered, his face grotesquely smudged and bruised, his clothes in rags and muddy, Will Farnaby awoke with a start.”, appearing to be the inspiration for the very beginning of LOST.
- Synopsis: In Island, Huxley transports us to a Pacific island where, for 120 years, an ideal society has flourished. Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy and enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala and events begin to move when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there. What Faranby doesn’t expect is how his time with the people of Pala will revolutionize all his values and — to his amazement — give him hope.

I have never seen them for sale in any stores and not even on any websites (Amazon, ABC.com, etc.), so I thought I should share a couple of photos.
